Uncle Paul and
his painted pumpkins
Uncle Paul’s Produce market (2310 SE Hawthorne, 503.484.8612) has been open since November, 2003. “I am amazed at how welcome the neighborhood and surrounding community has made us feel. It has created an awesome first year,” said Paul Widerburg, owner of Uncle Paul’s.

Uncle Paul’s has had a tradition of celebrating the harvest season for over thirty years. He loves to sell local apples, pears, squashes and all other in-season produce from all his local farmers.

Paul also loves to involve the community in creating harvest celebration fun by purchasing 12 giant Big Max Pumpkins from a local Food Alliance supported farm. They each weigh over 100 pounds. He is also a cartoonist and paints cartoon faces on The Big Max Pumpkins with the help of his two girls, Sadie and Chantelle. You can win one of these Halloween pumpkins by entering the annual coloring contest. There is no age limit to the coloring contest, so just as many adults enter as do kids. Each year the rules are different.

You will see Uncle Paul’s, 2310 SE Hawthorne, looking festive this holiday with Indian corn and corn stalks, every variety of pumpkins and gourd imaginable and the cartoon painted pumpkins. These pumpkins last a long time.

Uncle Paul enjoys educating the community about produce in season by being a regular writer for Walk About magazine. Lately, he has written articles about berries, pluots and squash.

He also donates all salvageable produce to Fish Emergency Service. The rest is used in compost.

Many runners and walkers recognize Uncle Paul because he’s the one at the end of the walks and races standing at the end of his pickup truck handing out fresh free samples of watermelon, oranges, plums, pluots and apples; a welcome site for the tired and thirsty.

This year Uncle Paul is looking forward to supporting the national Down Syndrome Society Buddy Walk on October 16, 2004 at 10 am at the Rose Quarter Commons. Over 200 Down Syndrome participants will be involved. Each participant will receive a painted mini pumpkin and a crisp Hood River apple from Uncle Paul’s produce market.

Uncle Paul’s Pumpkin patch in the year round open air produce market is a fun place to enjoy the harvest season and get into the autumn spirit.
